The government has announced the results of its environmental red tape challenge initiative. The package will see 132 environmental regulations improved, mainly through simplification or mergers; 70 kept as they are, to uphold important environmental protections, and the repeal of 53 others that are obsolete.
According to government estimates they will save businesses more than £1billion over five years. Examples of areas where burdens will be eased are in the transfer of waste, remediation operations, and producer responsibility obligations.

Representatives from nearly a hundred different companies were given a glimpse of the future at a brand new networking group for East Lancashire’s business community.
Andy MacNae, head of Regeneration for Rossendale Borough Council, outlined the council’s strategy for regenerating the area at the inaugural gathering of ‘Meet and Eat at the Chambers’.
The event, which was organised by the Chamber of Commerce East Lancs, in association with Cassons Chartered Accountants, ISSL Web Design and Viva PR, took place at St Mary’s Chambers in Rawtenstall and attracted 113 delegates.

The 6th of April will herald one of the biggest ever shake-ups in town planning. From that date neighbourhoods will have access to new planning powers.
Not only will the local council produce plans, parish councils and other representative neighbourhood groups will have the power to make planning policy.
Already over 200 parishes are experimenting with these new powers. And with £50 million rumoured to be up for grabs to support communities in this work up until 2015 expect many more to take up the baton and neighbourhood plan.
